LOOKING was developed as a part of my ongoing project (since 2004: Films, TV, Widescreen, “F” for Films) which is a process of drawing from movies, films of all kinds, which I typically view as videotapes or DVD’s. With each film the task is to reduce a time-based experience, a long sequence of images, to a panel or two of incidents, translated into lines/shapes. The shapes drawn are those notated by my eye-site on a TV screen, and the moment of drawing them exists simultaneously with the moment of looking at them. There is no thought of expressionism. I do not attempt to recover the ‘essence’ of the film, merely its presence in my domestic space. The lines’ substance on the installation is a mass of moments of looking translated into the material form.
